Tulsa-Based Duo Heads to Texas Desert to Capture "Precious Pain" with Renowned Drummer Michael Jerome
TULSA, OK – DECEMBER 1, 2025 – MICEFOLK, the indie duo making waves in Tulsa's thriving music scene, will record their debut album Precious Pain at the legendary Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas this December. The 9-track album will be produced by Jeffrey Jeffus, with engineering by Sonic Ranch's in-house team and drums by acclaimed session musician Michael Jerome (Slash, Toadies, Better Than Ezra, John Cale, and Blind Boys of Alabama).
Sonic Ranch, the world's largest residential recording studio, has hosted some of indie music's most influential artists—from Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Bon Iver to The Mars Volta, Midlake, and Explosions in the Sky. The sprawling pecan grove estate on the Texas-Mexico border offers artists creative isolation and sonic clarity, making it the perfect setting for MICEFOLK's atmospheric, emotionally literate sound.
"There's nowhere to hide in the desert," says Jeffrey about choosing Sonic Ranch. "That's what we need. This album demands that kind of honesty."
A Fresh Start Ignites Creative Fire
Jeffrey and Megan relocated to Tulsa in 2024 after years of visiting the city's vibrant music community. The move has proven transformative—Jeffrey has written enough material for two to three albums since arriving, channeling the energy of a fresh start into some of his most compelling work yet.
"Tulsa gave us space to breathe and build this the right way," Megan explains. "The community here values listening. People come to shows to actually hear the music, not just be entertained. That engagement feeds everything we create."
The duo's timing aligns with Tulsa's emergence as a creative hub beyond music. With film productions like Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon and FX's The Lowdown recently filming in the city, Tulsa is attracting artists across disciplines. MICEFOLK's cinematic sound—featuring Megan's haunting keyboard and cello work and Jeffrey's literary storytelling—positions them naturally for sync licensing and soundtrack opportunities.
Music That Sees You
Precious Pain showcases MICEFOLK's range and depth across tracks like "The Curse" (a werewolf love song with unexpected humor), "Fucked-Up Dreams" (3am reckonings with raw honesty), "Before Phones" (wistful nostalgia for simpler times), and "Pacing the Floor Over Anne" (maddening heartbreak that lingers). Other songs include "Sher of Aberdeen," "Slow Descent Into Hell," "In Knots," “Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,” and "Billboard."
